Important Newsflash! National University Classics Body Casts Doubt on RHUL Management’s Planning Document!
Professors R. G. Osborne, FBA (Cambridge) and Bruce Gibson (Liverpool), Chairman and Secretary of the Council of University Classics Departments, have written to the Dean fundamentally questioning the college’s analysis of the situation.
They are concerned that the document ‘makes assumptions about both the national and the international context of Classics that we believe to be misleading, and that it underestimates the power and attractions of the current RHUL Classics department.’
They see the figures as supporting not 40 undergraduates a year but 74, and that ‘a rump of five classics staff located in history plus two located in other departments would not be seen in the wider world as constituting ‘teaching Classics’ in any meaningful sense’.
